Sacral Neuromodulation

Sacral neuromodulation, sometimes called a bladder pacemaker, uses electrical stimulation to help regulate the nerves involved in bladder function.

Who may be considered?

It may be considered for suitable patients with certain voiding disorders, overactive bladder symptoms or difficulty emptying the bladder without an obstruction. Response to previous treatments and the individual’s health are assessed together.

The treatment process

A test phase is usually carried out first, during which changes in symptoms are monitored. Depending on the test results and the doctor’s assessment, implantation of a permanent system may be planned.

Living with the device

The care team explains device monitoring, settings and use. Battery life and MRI compatibility may differ between models. Always tell your healthcare team about the device before an imaging examination.
